OUR WORK

SHOW: Giving Voice to the Unheard

Older adults are one of the fastest-growing groups entering homelessness in Canada, and many face it for the first time late in life. Rising rents, fixed incomes, health challenges, and financial exploitation pile up fast, and the people living through it in Waterloo Region often go unseen. Supportive Housing of Waterloo (SHOW) sees this reality every day.

As the only organization in the region with a dedicated supportive housing building for older adults who have experienced homelessness, SHOW holds the stories that could make this crisis visible. What they needed was a way to tell those stories, one that honoured the dignity of the people living them and gave the community a reason to pay attention. They were looking for a partner who could capture vulnerable voices with care and turn them into something that moves people to act through a short documentary film and community event.

SERVICES ENGAGED:

Our Solution

Alongside the dedicated team at SHOW, we:

  • Produced, directed, and edited a short documentary anchored in one resident's lived experience, surrounded by staff and community voices that gave the issue context

  • Facilitated story circles and interviews using a trauma-informed approach, so residents shared only what they chose to, at their own pace

  • Planned and hosted a community screening that brought donors, partners, and the public face to face with the issue

  • Developed a discussion guide, event invitation, and supporting assets to carry the story from the screen into real conversation

  • Delivered a lasting asset SHOW can carry into grant applications, donor meetings, presentations, and digital channels

  • Managed the project end to end, staying close to SHOW's values and resident wellbeing throughout

A Community Brought Together

Wider Reach and Recognition

The project drew local media coverage, including a newspaper feature, and reinforced SHOW’s role as the region’s voice on senior homelessness and supportive housing.

Working with Bright Light Digital on our documentary, Unhoused, Unheard and Unbroken, was an incredible experience from beginning to end. Their team brought a combination of technical expertise, creativity, and genuine compassion to a project that required both sensitivity and empathy.

They took the time to understand not only our organization, but also the lived experiences of the people whose stories were being shared. The result is a documentary that exceeds every expectation. It captures the dignity, resilience, and humanity of people experiencing homelessness while helping audiences better understand the complex realities behind the issue.

The response has been overwhelming. Our premiere sold out, the film has sparked important conversations throughout our community, and we've received requests for additional screenings from organizations across Ontario. Bright Light Digital created a powerful advocacy and education tool that will continue to shape public understanding for years to come.
